Welcome! This Blog will be a place for the Maricopa County Community College STEM-CURE project to share all the latest news and information with you. Posts will include upcoming events and activities, as well as experiences of students, faculty, and staff as they engage in course-based undergraduate research. So let's get started by introducing the project!
What is STEM-CURE?
Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) have been shown to increase recruitment and retention of students into STEM fields. However, very little data has been collected on the practice with community college students. MCCCD was awarded a 5-year $1,499,985 HSI grant from the National Science Foundation (HRD-1832543) to integrate multi-disciplinary CUREs and measure the outcomes. This project has the potential to impact more than 3000 MCCCD community college students. What is a CURE?
It is authentic research based on a community need or problem that takes place in a class by students. CUREs have key elements in common: • The use of scientific practices • Discovery • Broadly relevant or important work • Collaboration • Iteration (building on prior knowledge, repeating experiments and using multiple approaches to address the research question).
